Don’t just read the Straits Times, use google reader

Normally, its people who request google to put up their ads, but this is something different. I’m doing the advertising for google instead :)

I discovered only recently the wonders of RSS feeds. For those whom don’t know anything about the term (you should be ashamed of yourselves), a RSS feed is like a simplified way to browse content on the net. Articles will be kept neatly under headlines, and rather than opening numerous tabs and browsing them, RSS allows you to view everything under one neat window.

The only problem with RSS feeds however, is that you need a programme to use them. I initially started reading RSS feeds using some freeware from Firefox, but it the interface felt quite clumsy and out of touch.

That’s when I came across google reader. Since most of you will already have gmail accounts, when you log in to check your mail, just click the “Reader” tab on the top part of the screen. Then, go to your favourite websites and copy and paste the RSS links on to the subscription feed.

I’m advocating this because I’m now really seeing the power of information, and reading from more than one news source. NO — this is not building up toward a rant about how the Straits Times is a PAP loudspeaker and you need to read other sources to get enlightened; I’ve just realised over the last few months how much great stuff there is to read on the internet, and you’ll be cheating yourself if you’re not part of the RSS fever.

Dude…I hate to say it but you’re alittle slow. I’ve been on rss feeds for years now. Google reader is pretty useful (I’m on it too!), but these days I get swamped by my RSS.

I’m on the BBC headliner feed and have ‘349 unread’. They update every few minutes.

Stay on it long enough and you’ll get what I mean by ‘noise’ :P

haha I know I am really really slow… and yes, BBC does tend to give a flood of info, so I end up scrolling through in hyperspeed before eventually succumbing to the “mark all as read” button.

i guess why Im behind RSS is cuz until last year, not only did i not know about RSS, i also didn’t read much about current affairs and stuff. didn’t give two hoots. ironically, when i started preparing for my PSC interview, that got me in the game

    I use bloglines :-)

and yes, i agree with the noise problem. Unread articles choke up my reader like nobody’s business.
